5 Best Apps to Relieve Stress:
#1: Relieve Stress with the…
Why I love it to Relieve Stress: It has re-framed how I think about meditation because it introduced me to guided meditation. See the MEDITATION section below for more on that. 🙂
What’s In It:
There are 3 different areas of the app – Meditation, Sleep and Music…
PART #1 MEDITATION: What do you think of when you think of meditation? Only hippie yoga freaks meditate. Who has time to meditate? I can’t sit still!
I used to think that you have to sit cross legged on the floor and go, “Ummmmm” with your thumb and your middle finger making a circle.
Nope! Turns out there are so many less rules to meditation than I ever thought. You don’t even have to be sitting! And boy let me tell ya… meditation relieves stress. It’s so worth it!
So let me tell you all about my favorite GUIDED MEDITATION within the Calm app! If you’re like me, you have umpteen million squirrels flying around in your head or you feel like you have a million tabs open all at once inside your brain.
Sound familiar? I’m tellin’ ya… You HAVE to check out guided meditation! It has been amazing for me because someone is guiding me through it the whole time. It quiets the squirrels which is soooo mentally rejuvenating!
My favorite guided meditation within the Calm app is called The 7 Days of Calm.
I didn’t even do it 7 days in a row, but instead I became more in-tune with my stress level. When I would feel myself getting stressed and overwhelmed, instead of letting that spiral into anxiety, I would grab my phone and turn on The 7 Days of Calm.
If you think meditation isn’t right for you…
“Only hippie yoga freaks meditate.” Nope! I totally understand where you’re coming from because that’s the generalization that most people make (and I kinda did too) but I truly mean this when I say that EVERYONE needs meditation in their lives. Well… Everyone with STRESS that is, which is pretty much all of us. 😉
“Who has time to meditate?” It’s only 10 minutes. You DO have time to dedicate toward this. We’re talking about your LIFE here! Take those 10 minutes – it’s going to affect the whole rest of your day. Either way actually – if you DON’T take time to do this you’re probably going to stay stressed out, overwhelmed and crabby and if you DO take the time for it, you’ll feel so much better and your whole family will benefit as well.
“I can’t sit still!” Ohhhh this was SO ME! Sit still AND try to quiet my mind?! Ha! Well… THAT is the beauty in guided meditation. I am able to get SO much more out of the whole meditation thing when someone is talking me through it. And by the way, I don’t sit. I lay down on my back and relax and most times I don’t even fall asleep! 😉
PART #2 SLEEP: Another area of the Calm app has sleep stories that you can listen to if you have trouble falling asleep. When I was struggling with anxiety a lot, I had a hard time falling asleep and I think that these stories would’ve been helpful.
PART #3 MUSIC: This is a really cool part of the app too! There’s one that’s called Pushing The Senses. It’s meant for relaxation but I could see this helping me to focus when I’m getting work done. Especially when I’m working in a coffee shop or working with the kids home, I like to put my earbuds in and listen to some background music that will help me focus. I have way too much of a squirrel brain to listen to anything with words and actually be able to work at the same time, so just peaceful music is awesome for working!
Time/Day: 10-15 minutes
Cost: FREE! There are different things inside the app that you can unlock and utilize those areas, but I haven’t paid for anything and I absolutely LOVE it.
#2: Relieve Stress with the…
Jesus Calling Daily Devotional App!
Why I love it to Relieve Stress: They are short daily devotionals and I can relate them to my life really easily.
I don’t always understand scripture readings very well, but when I’m able to apply it to my own life, then I understand it.
You know when you have the scripture reading and then the sermon in church? I try SO hard to understand the scripture reading but then when the sermon comes, it’s like a total light bulb moment where it all actually clicks because it’s in lay-mans terms.
Another aspect that I like about the Jesus Calling app is that the devotionals are written as if Jesus is talking to you. Instead of saying, “Walk with Jesus throughout your day today”, it would say, “Walk with me throughout your day today.” Having it feel like Jesus is actually talking to me draws me into what I’m reading.
What’s In It: It starts with the devotional part that draws you nearer to God/Jesus and then at the bottom there are passages from the Bible that show where they pulled the information from to create the devotional at the top.
Time/Day: 3-5 minutes
Cost: This app is the only one on the list that isn’t free – it costs $9.99 but it’s totally worth it! I’m not an affiliate, I just really get a lot out of it.
(The Jesus Calling app for Android looks different than the one for iPhone, so I’m not sure if it’s the same as the one that I have.)
#3: Relieve Stress with the…
First 5 Daily Devotional App!
Why I love it to Relieve Stress: It helps me apply scripture to MY LIFE and I can use the “My Moment” part of the app as a journal prompt if I want to for that day!
What’s In It: Each daily devotional has 5 different parts – Scripture, Application to Real Life, Prayer, More Moments, My Moment.
- Scripture & Application to Real Life:
It starts with a scripture reading at the top and then it goes into how to apply that scripture to a real life scenario. For example, one was about how they have a family member who is struggling with addiction and how he made so many mistakes that it felt like he was beyond hope. The message of the story is that you’re never beyond hope – God reaches all of us.
- Sample Prayer:
After the scripture and how to apply that to real life, then they have a sample prayer. I love reading it and then putting it into my own terms and having my own little conversation with God.
- More Moments:
The 4th part is called “More Moments“. This is where you can dive in deeper on the topic.
- My Moment:
Like I mentioned above, my FAVORITE part of the whole app is that they end with “My Moment“. They ask you a question and then you answer that question either right there in the app or you can journal your answer. The reason why I love this part so much is that you can take everything that you just read and apply it to your life.
You will hear me say this time and time again… You can learn all you want, but if you never APPLY what you’ve learned, it’s a waste of time and energy.
Time/Day: This daily devotional takes a longer for me (I would say about 10 minutes) to get through than the Jesus Calling app, but the parts of it that I really like make it worth the time investment.
#4: Relieve Stress with…
I know you already have Pinterest on your phone and you’re probably thinking,
“What? How is Pinterest going to help me alleviate stress? I’m going to add that many more recipes to my board and feel even more overwhelmed?”
Haha! No…not quite.
Why I love it to Relieve Stress: I use Pinterest to alleviate stress by reassuring myself that I’m not alone. So many times when I’m struggling with something, I feel like I’m all alone. Like I’m the only one in the whole world who’s struggling with that problem.
I know that’s not logical, but a lot of times our inner dialogue is not so logical, right?! 🙂
What I do is look up on Pinterest what I’m struggling with and find blog posts written by people who are struggling with the same thing or used to be struggling with the same thing.
Reading those blog posts give me that feeling of, “Ahhh… I’m not alone.” That in and of itself alleviates a lot of stress.
Above and beyond that, the writer of those blog posts will usually include how they got through that particular struggle. So after I’m done reading it, I can take that advice and implement it into my life so that it helps me to get through what is stressing me out.
What’s In It: I’m pretty sure I can skip this section when it comes to Pinterest, right? 🙂 We all know how it works.
Time/Day: Hahahaha… Hours and hours on end? Just kidding, but I know I could definitely spend a lot of time on there, that’s for sure!
#5: Relieve Stress with…
Why I love them to Relieve Stress: Games provide a “brain break” for me.
- They’re something FUN to do on my phone
- I feel like I’m accomplishing something (even though it’s definitely not accomplishing anything important)
- It brings me back to my childhood when I used to play Super Nintendo
I’ve always loved games – of ANY kind: card games, dice games, board games, app games… anything!

My Favorite Fun Game: Everybody has different games on their phone that are fun. A couple of my favorites have been FarmVille (which I had to stop playing because I was totally getting addicted to it 😉 ) and a new one that my mom introduced me to is called Seekers Notes.
In Seekers Notes, there are all of these different locations – some of them are search & find, there’s one that’s like Candy Crush called Treasure Box, there’s one that is like a game of memory – there’s a lot to it, but yet it’s simple at the same time. It’s so much fun and has been a huge stress reliever for me.
If you like doing Sudoku or crosswords or word searches – whatever you find fun, download that on your phone!
Even if you’re on your lunch break and you just need a brain break for 5 minutes, having fun games right at your fingertips can relieve stress like crazy.

Time/Day: This one kind of falls into the same category as Pinterest when it comes to amount of time per day. Could be endless, but just make sure you’re not spending so much time on it that it’s actually causing you stress instead of relieving stress.
Cost: My favorite games are totally FREE!
